ABOUT ME

My name is Stephen Maier. As a historian, I am passionate about old films and all kinds of archival material. Over the years, I have specialised in the research, rights clearance and licensing of footage, pictures and other third-party material for documentaries and other media projects.

I studied history, communication and media management.

In 2015, I attended the masterclass „Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris“, a one-year training program for European film producers and distributors at the film schools „Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg“ (Ludwigsburg), „La Fémis“ (Paris) and the NFTS (London).

For several years, I worked as a documentary producer for a German production company, where I was involved in historical documentaries for German television. In 2020, I became a freelance Archive Producer based in Berlin, working with production companies in the USA, the UK, France, Germany, and several other countries. I have been involved in a wide range of projects—mainly historical and sports documentaries—for ZDF, ARD, ARTE, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

I am one of the initiators of the „Archive Day“ by the European Film Market (EFM) and a founding member of German Researchers and Archive Producers (GRAP).
